PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2008 & THE JOB MARKET

McCain-Palin on Working in America

John McCain and Sarah Palin are running their campaign on a platform of reform and economic growth with an eye toward helping families. McCain has a history of supporting middle class families by way of legislation that enables families to take time off of work to care for newborn children and for relatives with serious illness. This was evidenced by McCain's support of the 1993 Family Medical Leave Act.

More recently, McCain co-sponsored the Family Friendly Workplace Act which would enable workers to parlay their over-time hours into time off such that one could trade those hours for the occasional day off that is sometimes needed to balance home life issues with the time spent at work.

McCain-Palin advocate that workers be able to keep their medical and dental coverage along with their retirement plans through any change in jobs, or at least be offered a comparable new plan. McCain-Palin support any older Americans that still want to work and believe that they should be allowed to contribute. McCain-Palin also support the new trends in the American work force, by aiming to eliminate legal and traditional barriers to work-at-home jobs and telecommuting.

As he has advocated for years, John McCain supports small business and expects most new job growth will come from that sector. He supports tax-relief, health insurance reform and flexible working hours as important parts of the effort to bring relief to small business owners and workers.
