BEST COMPANY HAS BEST COMPASSION
One of Fortune magazine's 2008 top 100 companies to work for, Methodist Hospital System, based in Houston, Texas, has a rare program of compassion for the terminally ill. Called "No One Dies Alone," the program is unsung but quite profound in its implications.
Employees of Methodist Hospital volunteer to take special training to become "Compassionate Companions." This group is part of the Methodist "No One Dies Alone" ministry. Members are on call to provide companionship for patients that would otherwise have no one at their bed side as they passed.
In addition, in the "Patient Partner" program, volunteer employees also spend time with non-terminal patients that may be in for a long stay and feeling isolated or lonely.
Aside from these programs, it should also be noted that Methodist Hospital System employs 76% women and 66% minorities.
See page 6 of FORWARD, the Methodist Hospital Foundation publication, for an article on "No One Dies Alone."
