BLUE DENIM INSULATION
Though it's been in the news here and there, surprisingly
few people are in the know when it comes to one of the latest and greatest
"green" building materials. In fact, this "green" building material is
actually blue.
It made news in 2006 when celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Gwen Stefani
donated their blue jeans to be recycled into denim insulation for "Habitat
for Humanity" projects. Bonded Logic, manufacturer of "Ultratouch"(TM)
insulation teamed with Polo's Ralph Lauren to contribute this special
insulation made from denim. This material is practically "itch-less" as
compared to spun fiberglass and it offers the same, if not better, R-factor
rating and sound resistance.
Blue jeans may be recycled, essentially washed and shredded, as JBM Fibers
of Brownsville, Texas did for Polo's "Give Your Jeans a New Home" initiative.
The raw cotton material, however, is also reclaimed from pre-consumer
sources such as blue jean factories. What bits and pieces of denim found
on the floor can now can be collected and used, turning an industrial
waste into an eco-friendly commodity.
Schools and institutions already using denim insulation include: Lewis and Clark College, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Hackensack University Medical Center. See more about Blue Denim Insulation at these websites:
