FULL SAIL AHEAD FOR THE BELUGA-GROUP

Many would be surprised at the amount of CO2 emissions that are caused by the sea-going cargo shipping industry. Extremely large engines in cargo ships, necessary for safe ocean crossings, pump out an inordinate amount of green house gases as compared to emissions from land-based trucks and rail with similar capacities.

In the first month of 2008 an innovative application of ancient maritime technology was used to demonstrate the willingness of at least one shipping company to take the problem of emissions seriously. Further, as we've seen again and again in the green technology industry, the benefits of this innovation are not limited to saving the environment, it also affects the bottom-line, positively.

On January 22, 2008, the 435 foot long MV "Beluga SkySails", a heavy cargo ship, opened up a massive kite over its bow. The kite was let out to a height of approximately 900 feet, using the strong, steady easterly winds to ease the work of the ship's large engines.

Making use of a traditional maritime windjammer route, the MV "Beluga SkySails" made modern history, emitting up to 20% less CO2 during it's journey. See a number of jobs now open at The Beluga-Group GmbH.
